The largest overhang we had to build was for the patio just off Eric's bedroom.  The overhang
was going to be too large to make self-supporting, so we had to build a foundation wall with some
sort of pillars.  For the wall, we simply used CMU block and filled them with rebar and concrete.
We made the pillars out of six inch diameter thick wall copper pipe, filled with rebar and concrete.  
At the top we embedded a three foot length of 7/8 inch threaded rod to secure the support beams.
Here is the framework for the overhang.  Of all the overhangs, I had been most worried about
this one, but it actually turned out to be the sturdiest.  Those copper pillars are really rigid.
